The Malingsbo-Kloten Nature Reserve
The Malingsbo-Kloten Nature Reserve in southern Dalarna and northern Västmanland is one of the biggest nature reserves in Sweden. High hills and deep valleys surround a long stretch of excellent paddling water with steep cliffs descending dramatically into the river along narrow stretches. The wilderness is located on top of a higher plateau and the wildlife is rich. There are a lot of moose, deer and beavers but also lynxes, wolves and bears are represented. The chances of seeing lynxes, wolves and bears are, however, very slim because the animals are low in number and very shy. Sometimes howling wolves can be heard at night. Moose, deer and beavers are more common. The reserve is one of the most moose-populated areas in the world and one of few wolf territories in Sweden. None of the animals pose a threat to humans

The beautiful and untouched nature reserve is classified as central Europe's closest wilderness: 2.5 hours journey (200 km) by car from the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The nature reserve has an abundance of good canoeing, bicycling and hiking trails and is very well looked after. Along the trails there are a great number of rest areas with sturdy rain and wind shelters. At the rest areas there are good, strong fireplaces in front of each rain and wind shelter. There is no charge for camping at rest areas or at other places in the nature reserve. The fishing is excellent and the forest is good for picking berries and mushrooms

The history of Kloten
The history of Kloten is divided into three epochs: iron-producing in the 17th century, a lumber jack boom between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and our current epoch, which is characterised by environmentally-friendly tourism
The forest has been protected from development since 1950, when the wilderness become a nature reserve. This is the reason why the forest has been left in peace and why the wilderness still is a popular retreat for many wild animals. This fact makes the nature reserve unique from the rest of central Sweden
At the end of the iron-producing era and the beginning of the lumber era (in the early 20th century), Kloten had a population of more than 1000 inhabitants. Today, the population is around 30 people
Two grocery stores were once located on either side of the small village square; however, both stores closed down long ago, and the two buildings became family homes. Since 2003, Nordic Discovery has run the Adventure Center in one of the buildings and the Wilderness Lodge in the other
Local places of interest
1. The old railway station. Between 1877 and 1934 there was a railroad between Kloten and BÃ¥nghammar (located south of Kopparberg). Between the railway station and the Adventure Center is the remains of a loading platform
2. The old locomotive garage. A message board is located outside of the garage and displays interesting pictures from the past
3. The Kloten Trail. A 5 km marked hiking trail
4. The Troll Hill. There is a marked hiking trail from Kloten to the Troll Hill. 2 km to the top of the hill (Round trip 4 km)
5. The Grass Hill. The hill is the highest point in the nature reserve. Splendid views of the forest and lakes from the top of a tall watch tower. There is a marked hiking trail from Kloten the Grass Hill. 8 km to the top of the hill (Round trip 16 km). Read about hiking in the nature reserve >>
6. The Ã…bo Cottage. An old hillside cottage along the hiking trail Bergslagsleden. Back in time, the poorest people lived in hillside cottages, and it is interesting to see what they are like. 7. The Canoe trail north of Kloten. The trail stays to the inside of the first islands and then keeps going north along excellent paddling water and untouched wilderness for many days. Read about the canoe trail >>
8. The local swimming place
9. The location of the old sawmill. Today there are no remains left from the old steam-driven sawmill which was in use between 1901 and 1939
10. The ruins of from the old iron work. The iron producing once took place along the small stream between the two lakes (which produced the hydropower that was used for the industry). The iron work was in use until 1910. The ruin of the iron work is located 100 meters west of the Wilderness Lodge. Today, there is a fish farm located there that breeds rainbow and brown trout for release into the lakes of the nature reserve. Read about fishing in the nature reserve >>
