Canoe paddling through a beaver-rich wilderness area in Sweden

At sunset, while the sun goes down behind undulating forests, we paddle out on a beaver safari. Through the beaver-rich wilderness area, we move as silently as possible in Canadian canoes (the Native Americans’ traditional canoe with space for two adults- which, in common language, is simply called, ‘canoe’). It is in the evening, under the shelter of the trees’ long shadows that the beaver is very active. With care, we glide in silence towards the beaver huts. Slowly, slowly, in order to get as close as possible without harming the beavers

The adventure starts with a three-course dinner with many ingredients from the forest. Over dinner we listen to the experienced and knowledgeable (native Swedish) beaver guide Mikael Nilsson, who informs us about the beaver and many other wild animals in the forest. When the paddling starts, everyone has to be absolutely silent. Then we only communicate with sign language (a necessary condition if we are to see the shy and hard-working nibblers)

The chances of seeing beavers are very high. Many beavers were spotted on all beaver safaris during the 2011 season, and the same was true in many other years as well. Our success with spotting beavers has been very good. Our best safari delivered ‘beaver contact’ for the whole duration of the paddling trip (3 hours)

Beaver safari – Accommodation, dinner & breakfast

The tour includes: A 5-hour guided beaver safari, a three-course dinner, a one-night in a double room, sheets, towels, breakfast with home-made bread and cereal, canoes, paddles, life jackets, water-proof sacks and seat mats

Start and finish at Kloten's Wilderness Lodge. Comfortable beds, personal touch and wild and exotic animals around the corner

The village Kloten is located in the heart of the Malingsbo-Kloten Nature Reserve along road 233 between Skinnskatteberg and Kopparberg. 2.5 hours drive from Stockholm. Maps and road description >>

Number of participants: 4-9 persons

Price: 1750 SEK. Children under 15 years: 1500 SEK

Safaris are conducted between May 12 and September 29
On uneven weeks: Saturdays- Sundays (weeks 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39 of the year)
On even weeks: Fridays-Saturdays (weeks 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 of the year)
Parties containing 4 or more participants have the choice to book on other weekdays as well

The paddling is not physically demanding. We paddle very carefully and with as little noise as possible

Equipment: Rain gear (in case of rain or as a backup against rain) and warmer clothes to put on after sunset, when the temperature often drops

Information: At the start, a briefing containing detailed information about the safari and basic paddling instructions are provided 

Camera flashes do not scare the beavers 

Safety: The guide is very experienced and is a certified life guard, having passed all of the Swedish Life Guards’ Association’s tests for Life Guard Education. A first aid kit is brought on the tour

Start and finish time: Depending on the hour of sunset, start and finish times vary throughout the season. We finish in full darkness and start 5 hours earlier

Beaver & moose safari combination

Occurs according to the detailed standard program above in combination with the moose safari program >> + lunch on day 2. The safari combination is arranged Friday-Sunday between May 11 and September 28. Parties with 4 or more participants can also book the safari combination on other days. Price: 3500 SEK. Children under 15 years: 3000 SEK

Beaver safari - evening tour with dinner

Occurs according to the standard program detailed above but without the overnight stay and breakfast. The safari is arranged between May 12 and September 29. On uneven weeks: Saturdays. On even weeks: Fridays. Parties with 4 or more participants can book the safari on other days as well. Price: 1250 SEK. Children under 15 years: 1000 SEK

Beaver safari - evening tour with wilderness picnic

Occurs according to the standard program detailed above, except with a wilderness picnic instead of dinner, and without accommodation and breakfast. The safari runs for 4 hours and includes a wilderness picnic with tea and sandwiches (made with home-made bread). Parties with 4 or more participants can book the safari any day between May 10 and September 30. Price: 1000 SEK. Children under 15 years: 750 SEK

Occurs according to the standard program detailed above, except with a wilderness picnic instead of dinner. The safari runs for 4 hours and includes a wilderness picnic with tea and sandwiches (made with home-made bread), accommodation and breakfast. Parties with 4 or more participants can book the safari any day between May 10 and September 30. Price: 1500 SEK. Children under 15 years: 1250 SEK
