Nittälven - Fantastic spring paddling in flowing water with easy rapids

Nittälven curls through the wilderness. Photo: Roger Lundberg
The river Nittälven curls through a deep and beautiful pine forest. The forest is located on top of a bank of a sandbank. At some places, the river has broken through and continued straight forward instead of taking its old, meandering path. The remains are small oxbow lakes
The flipside of the coin, however, is that the river is impassable when the water level is normal. The whole length of Nittälven is only passable in spring or after long periods of heavy rain, when the water level is very high. The recommended time to paddle is from the beginning of April to around the 10th of May. Paddling along the whole length of Nittälven should not be planned after the 10th of May after a year with the normal amount of snow
At normal and low water level, the lower part of Nittälven can still be paddled, with start 1 km south of Kolbron; from there Nittälven is always passable, and the paddling down to Ljusnaren makes a nice one-day paddling trip. To extend the paddling to two days, it is recommended to paddle down to the untouched lake, Salbosjön. Another alternative is to paddle from Ljusnaren up to Havsjömossen on Day One, and back to Ljusnaren on Day Two. A good place to finish the trip and park your car is at Djäken's swimming place, at the east side of the lake, Ljusnaren. Call or e-mail for current water level information

The other canoe trails in Bergslagen
We have described Bergslagen's two wilderness paddling trails. The Malingsbo-Kloten Nature Reserve and Nittälven. Other canoe trails in Bergslagen are different in the respect that they sometimes pass civilization - farms, villages and sometimes even settlements. The Malingsbo-Kloten Nature Reserve and Nittälven are, in many respects, the two recommended rivers, but other canoe trails also offer good paddling
Nordic Discovery rents out canoes and kayaks and provides a very good transport service along Bergslagen's canoe trails. All canoe trails are along considerably easy rivers which don’t require previous knowledge or athletic paddlers. Along some trails, however, there can be some obstacles due to some fallen trees. The Malingsbo-Kloten Nature Reserve, Strömsholms Kanal and Hjälmare Kanal represent calm water paddling. These three rivers also offer the easiest paddling. There are no obstacles in the respect of fallen trees. The other rivers offer light, thrilling portions of rapids. At high water level, Nittälven offers the most thrilling and fun rapids. At high water level, the best rapids along Nittälven are the portages marked on the canoe trail description
Nordic Discovery offers a very good transport service along the canoe trails in Västmanland and the south of Dalarna. We wish you a warm welcome to Bergslagen, which has a lot to offer the keen paddler
